Celebrating 10 years of working together on the Karioi Project!

This year we’re celebrating 10 years of “Te Whakaoranga O Karioi” – the Karioi Project.

A decade ago, we saw an opportunity for the Raglan community to work together – taking positive action, restoring biodiversity, and bringing birds back to our backyards. Today, when we look back, we realise we’ve achieved so much more than that; about 10% of Raglan’s population is directly involved with the project – hapu, volunteers, landowners, “backyard hub”-ers, students, families and numerous partner organisations and businesses.

In 10 years, we have logged 27,000 hours of volunteer predator control and seabird monitoring and thousands of hours of environmental education to students aged 5 to 18 years in after-school and in-school programs.

We’ve also seen at least 14 Oi (seabird) chicks fledge from Karioi! This is a huge story of hope and success – a vulnerable seabird overcoming the odds against habitat loss, predation, food scarcity and changing weather patterns.

Although Oi have been hanging on by a thread, they’re finally starting to breed successfully. This is due to the incredible people in our community taking action for nature.

We can all make a difference to our local environment by making small changes.
