Eco Church NZ Update

27th October 2020

Since the soft launch of the Eco Church NZ project in July 2020, we are delighted to welcome our first five churches to join the Eco Church NZ network!

Representatives of the first three churches were at the Hope Seminar in Christchurch and Kristel van Houte was able to present them with their Eco Church NZ signs.

Kate Boardman from The Village Church and Community Centre

Richard and Carol Guise, and Kathryn Thorne from Papanui Baptist Church

Marty Redhead from Hope Presbyterian Hornby

In August 2020, we also piloted the Zero Waste programme for churches in Christchurch. The Zero Waste programme for churches is offered in partnership with Para Kore who has a decade of experience working with community groups, marae and schools towards zero waste. We started the pilot programme with seven churches in Christchurch with future plans to roll it out in other regions. We are hoping to bring an information session to Dunedin at the end of this year, and we’re exploring piloting the Zero Waste programme with another group of churches in Auckland in March 2021.

We have also started a Facebook group for Eco Church NZ – please join the group if you’d like to connect with people who want to integrate creation care and sustainability into the life of the church. Through this group, you will be able to ask questions, contribute to discussions, encourage each other, share stories and ideas, and post photos of initiatives at your church.

We’re also looking for stories to share of churches already leading the way in the area of sustainability and creation care, so if you know of a church doing something inspiring, please get in touch!
