Greater Wellington gathering takes place in lieu of national ARANZ hui

26th November 2021

As the lockdown in Auckland stretched longer, it became apparent that holding A Rocha’s 2021 national hui in late October would see a large number of people missing out, including many of the A Rocha trustees. So sadly, we had to postpone the national hui until a time when large nation-wide gatherings can take place again. After all the excitement and anticipation of planning to host the national ARANZ hui, we were disappointed to have to postpone it. It was really encouraging to see the great response and anticipation from the Wellington region for the national hui, so a “Wellington locals” gathering was held instead.

Greater Wellington gathering at St Andrew’s in Plimmerton

More than forty people gathered at St Andrew’s church, Plimmerton, sharing stories and connecting together. Participants included members from three different ARANZ conservation local groups and representatives from at least five different Eco Churches from across the region. Some came from as far afield as Palmerston North, Masterton and we even had one special visitor, Silvia Purdie, from Christchurch!

As well as enjoying a delicious and thoughtfully-sourced afternoon tea, the programme included the launch of a low carbon recipe book (compiled as part of the Anglican Diocese of Wellington’s Low Carbon Challenge), a presentation by Para Kore, our zero waste partners, and each church/group sharing highlights and hopes for their environmental work. The event connected people and provided a chance for mutual encouragement. A great reminder that we are not doing this journey alone but are part of a wider, growing movement.

We look forward to the time when we can meet from every part of Aotearoa again!
