Local Groups are humming post lockdown

Local groups around the country are busy and humming this planting season.

In Auckland, the Oakley Creek working bee had a great turnout in June and together planted over 300 trees, cleared out rubbish and had a great time catching up over lunch. Work also continues at Matuku Link and Unsworth Reserve, and a special event is being planned for September.

In Wellington, the Waiu Wetland working group was one of our earliest group to restart post lockdown and has been diligently continuing the work every third Saturday of the month. The Kapiti subgroup has gathered too, the Battle Hill Swampy Gully working bee is coming up in early August, and a joint retreat/working bee is planned for late August.

We are also seeing a flurry of activities in Christchurch with Silvia Purdie and her team organising this year’s “Hope Seminar” and the Zero Waste Pilot Programme for Churches in August. Meanwhile Steve Muir leads a new initiative – the Aranui Bike Fixup operating from a container at Breezes Road Baptist Church. A kids’ bike giveaway is scheduled for August too! What a busy time they’re having this August.

Down south at Tirohanga Camp, the Dunedin local group organised multiple plantings and all 300 trees sponsored by Trees That Count are now in the ground.
